Hello!
I am a sixth generation cattle rancher, just starting up a herd of my own. Though this piece of land isn’t technically mine (I’m renting) I am so lucky to have access to it. I share the pasture with a few others, including my big brother who is the actual landowner.
My grandfather has a working cattle ranch and growing up my whole family had the opportunity to pitch in and help, at the very least once every spring for Branding Day (AKA my favorite holiday).
Now that I have this lovely piece of land and a house and a garden that my sweet brother is letting me rent from him, I’ve been able to grow my tiny herd. Strangely, at the moment, my cattle are not on the pasture where I live, but are on the pasture where my brother lives. But I’ve got no shortage of cattle and sheep and horses to look after, as well as livestock dogs, barn cats, chickens and a garden bed that is full of weeds I haven’t had time to conquer yet this spring.
My family’s history is fascinating, and if you’d like to hear it I’d be happy to tell you more. But these days I’m more focused on the future. Learning how to be a better cook. Learning how to make a house into a home. Learning how to use and preserve what I’ve grown. Learning how to minimize waste and reduce reliance on grocery stores.
Feel free to tag along with me as I learn how to homestead, with what I’m certain will be a huge number of mistakes and missteps to laugh about along the way!
